Fun Fact!
POTS
A chronic, autonomic nervous system disorder.
abnormal, rapid increase in heart rate—often jumping by 30+ beats per minute—within minutes of standing up
Understanding the condition involves examining several specific facts, ranging from its prevalence to its management:
💡 Core Facts & Symptoms
Common Symptoms: Lightheadedness, brain fog, fatigue, heart palpitations, fainting, and gastrointestinal issues.
Not a Heart Problem: While it affects the heart rate, the root cause is a malfunctioning autonomic nervous system—the system that regulates involuntary bodily functions.
Diagnosis: Diagnosed using a tilt-table test, autonomic evaluations, or heart rate monitoring during postural changes.
Common Myth: POTS is not caused by anxiety. Many patients suffer from misdiagnoses, as extreme physical symptoms are sometimes wrongly attributed to psychiatric disorders.
👤 Who It Affects
Prevalence: POTS affects millions of Americans. The number of cases has risen significantly in recent years due to post-viral illnesses, including Long COVID.
Demographics: Approximately 75% to 85% of people with POTS are women between the ages of 13 and 50.
Triggers: Onset can occur suddenly or gradually, often triggered by a viral infection, pregnancy, trauma, or major surgery.
🩺 Management & Treatment
Lifestyle Adjustments: While there is no known cure, a majority of patients respond well to management strategies. These often include significantly increasing daily fluid and salt intake, wearing compression garments, and targeted physical therapy.
Medical Resources: Managing the condition usually requires guidance from specialists. To learn more or find support resources, you can visit the Dysautonomia International website or the Standing Up to POTS
